I want to put in your hands - what I so desperately needed when I started out!
I needed a system, an understanding of "how things worked", and a reference book.
I needed to know not only who to call - but also what to ask. Sometimes when you are dead-tired and exhausted, you just need someone to help you figure out the questions. So many times at the beginning, my head just felt "heavy", overwhelmed, easily losing my train of thought - having to learn so much so fast as it was a crisis.
Instead - picture yourself sleeping at night, peacefully. When you do get "the call" - instead of panicking - you can just listen fully present. You go into mental -mode - you know what you need to do next. Then know you can go to your file cabinet, or desk drawer and pull out a thumb drive with our information - or maybe you put it in a Cloud.
The point is: You have the structure and system of information in place - you can focus on getting packed, making coffee for yourself, getting ready and dressed, arranging for airline tickets, making the work-related calls and possibly arranging for a sitter or pet care...BUT you won't likely be panicked because the hard part is already done. You can review your system during the air-flight.
Likely, you won't be panicked or "frozen" with fear. You are fully trained and prepared with information. You can always check in if you need an update on something - or some input.
I'm not a jerk who can build a website then run off with your money. I'd rather give it back to you, if I can't help you.
I take "what I do" very seriously. When I started out at age 31, and I couldn't help save my Mom - it took her 17 days to die - and I tried so hard to save her life ...she was caught up in a web of hospital red tape - I went to media, seniors rights groups, everywhere I could think of. I vowed then I would help anyone that I could to help save the life of their loved one.
My community work with Tiger's Eye Society is well-known. We had a Hotline. I ran community training and support groups, and I created community strategic partnerships between businesses and community needs to help improve quality of life and create solutions that government couldn't move on quickly. I've been a long-distance caregiver twice - to both parents, once was while living out of country. I was the American in Canada, with the father living in the States. With my Mom, I was in California and she was back east.
Okay. So You Want to Know My Academic Qualifications.
In case you are curious - I have my Masters degrees in International Finance, and my PhD work in Human Behavior - Leadership in the Organization. I have post-graduate studies in Research Methodology, Statistics. Economics, and Film. I was a professional research writer, legislation analyst, keynote speaker and community trainer over 18 years when my Father's crisis landed in 2008. (It resurfaced in 2010). Actually, I left out a "qualification" in my explaining things above. I was licensed as a private investigator. I mostly took the Witness statements on personal injury cases - usually for vehicle collisions, and the occasional pedestrian collision, animal attack, or 'fight'. The type of consulting work I was doing already, this service supported clients I already had.
I believe I am the "real deal". I am tracking news stories for you almost daily, rare exceptions that I don't catch the news. (I've been tracking news since 1993 and was featured as a guest "Futurist" on television in Canada.) Many days I have national broadcasts on over 8 hours per day. I research and write daily. My schedule is to continue to update the training modules and to keep the blog current and library refreshed. This is not a book you will see published several years ago and the years go by without update or reprints. This is a LIVE website - it is rolling forward continuing education.
In all my market research - I didn't find anything aimed at protecting and supporting adult only children, business professionals living out of area from parents, or cross-border, or that was a "live" active system across multiple marketing platforms offering a forum and (soon) WIKI, and training modules on this topic.
My stand: It is TIME FOR TRANSPARENCY.
We need a national dialogue on aging and care.
It's an illusion, a dream, to sell seniors and elderly on "aging in place". It works for so few! They either cannot do it for health reasons, or they lack the availability of family members or friends who can move in and be their support system, and do direct care. Many times adult children no longer live near parents. More adult children today hold down more than one job, or travel.
SO - who is going to be the support system for the senior or elderly person in their home, doing the let's-face-it "dirty work" (cleaning their place and keeping them clean) - who is going to do that?
We need to start planning and training for the crisis call.We need to start talking about this! Why do so few Caregivers or estate settlers talk about how much there is to understand UNLESS you come at it with a "running start"?
That perfect storm - with the lightning bolt - it's here! Not enough care-workers, not enough adult children to take care of seniors and elderly, lower paid wages and people working more than one job to pay bills, or taking jobs in better paying markets, or traveling.
We have to FIX THIS! And in the meantime, train for the inevitable!
