4-20-14: CNN State of the Union with Anchor Candy Crowley today looks at the numbers released by the U.S. - 22 U.S. Military Vets commit suicide per year, on average.
"Whether it’s physical and mental health challenges, financial woes, or what some describe as the “daunting task” of re-assimilating to civilian life, the pressure can be overwhelming."
Guest on State of the Union include Senator John Walsh. He mentioned that the military does a good job of training soldiers, but not a great job of reintegrating them back into society.
Strange Remarks: “These men and women… are willing to sacrifice their lives for our country,” Walsh said.
[Caesi Bevis comments: Are they "willing" - - OR - - did they sign up for the National Guard and then were forced into active duty and were sent out of state to Iraq or Afghanistan? Did they "sign up" agreeing to multiple active tours of duty, many more than veterans ever had to serve in past wars, leaving behind family, and professional jobs? Did they agree to have their children grow up without them? Did they agree to lose relationships with their childhood sweethearts or much-loved spouses? Did they agree to go into bankruptcy to serve the country? Did they agree to be "older soldiers"? ]
According to CNN, one group that appears to be the most vulnerable to suicides are veterans 50 years and older. According to the VA, 69 percent of veteran suicides come from that age group, (5o years old, or older).
